As a teen, there are lots of things that affect you, and some of them aren’t so great. So, you may get sad, stressed, frustrated, you name it! You’re human and with that comes emotions, the good ones, and the not so good.

To feel better, you may turn to sleep, food, smoking, and some may even turn to alcohol or drugs. Is that the best way to find comfort? Nope, not really. Friends can help a lot. But, the #1 comfort in my opinion is your pet. Whether it be your dog or cat, or maybe even a hamster or lizard, they can brighten you up even when you’re feeling your worst.

I don’t know much about pets besides dogs and cats, so we’ll go with them. If you treat an animal right, domestic pets mostly, they will love you unconditionally. They don’t care what you look like, they don’t care if you’re popular at school or how many friends you have, and they don’t care about mistakes you may have made – they accept you for who you are. They see no fault in you; all they care about is your love.

They can sense your emotions, they love you when you cry, when you’re lonely, some can even tell when you’re sick. They pay more attention to you then, and there’s nothing like having a dog or cat come love on you when you’re feeling your worst. Their warmth is like no other, their love is like no other.

Did you know you can confide in your pet? That in itself can make you feel better, and besides, who are they going to tell, right? A secret is a secret. I talk to my cat, Jax, all the time, and sometimes little Paco. And of course, Rhaya talks to Snoozle a lot!

Sharing a Secret or Two

Psychologically how do they do it? Well, we touch them a lot by petting or hugging them. And physical touch is so important to both our physical and emotional health. Also, when you have problems that your mind just won’t let go of, your dog or cat keep you in the present, the here and now. That way you stop thinking about whatever might be bothering you.

When your pet makes you smile, like he does something cute or cuddly, or even silly, your brain triggers these “nerve transmitters” and produces “serotonin” and “dopamine.’ These 2 can cause you to be calmer and happier. We all want that, right???

So, if you have a pet, they’re part of the family too! Be sure and treat him or her with lots of love and respect. They’ll return your love ten-fold. And everyone needs to feel loved.

See ya, Jacob
