Guess What Teen’s Coming To Dinner
In today’s America, it seems that we don’t do nice things for each other as often as we should – especially when it comes to strangers, and it seems especially to teens. A little of that comes from fear of rejection, but mainly from fear of harm from the giver, or harm from the intended receiver. And unfortunately, some of it also comes from prejudices.
A few days ago, a Grandmother needed to give her grandson plans for Thanksgiving Dinner and knew the best way to get in touch with any teenager was to text them. She got a surprise reply that said “Who is this?”
The Grandmother tried to be current with “the times” so she replied “This is your Grandma,” and even put an emoji at the end.
The teenager, 17 year-old Jamal Hinton, knew his Grandmother didn’t know how to use a cell phone, so he had “Grandma” send a picture of herself, which she did. Seeing that it was a stranger, he joked around and sent a pic of himself and said “You’re not my Grandma, can I still get a plate tho?” She immediately replied “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do…feed everyone.”
Jamal thought the conversation was funny, so he posted the texts and got over 190,000 shares on Twitter.
The two decided to meet, and when they did the Grandma invited teenager, Jamal, again to dinner. Jamal, a senior in high school, accepted.
This is a great story of love between two humans; strangers of diverse backgrounds. This also shows how great the human spirit is. And, it shows how holidays can bring out the best in people.
I’ll be seeing ya, Marisal
